City as an object

4/4 of our small projects.

For this project, we were asked to draw from 10 shop/cafe windows that we found interesting.
I tried to use a variety of drawing tools and used inks for the first time.
I loved drawing these! I felt that there was so much I could do with them. I used different media depending on the feel and vibe of the place I was looking at.

Since its almost halloween, this gift shop had loads of decorations and pumpkins on its window so I used colour and tried to be quite detailed.

This next place was a very classy, vintage shop somewhere in Camberwell Green. The colours were quite dull so I used a brown aqua marker to do a quick line sketch.

Wellcome Collection and The Grant Museum of Zoology

I was bored and decided to go to a gallery. I went to the Wellcome Collection to see their new exhibition called 'Bedlam: The Asylum & Below'. It was really interesting and quite eye-opening. There were some quite disturbing patient stories and very beautiful pieces of work.

I made a few quick sketches which was difficult because it was so busy. I wanted to practice mark making and working quickly.

----

I then decided to go to the Grant Museum of Zoology since its really close to the Wellcome gallery. I usually go to the Hunterian Museum in Holborn quite a lot because I'm very interested in taxidermy and animals but I'd never been to the Grant museum.
I do prefer the Hunterian museum as its slightly bigger but found the Grant museum really fascinating. I made some quick sketches here also.

ANN - Monoprints

The last time I mono printed was during my foundation year at LCC which was 4 years ago. I love any type of printmaking and I knew this one was probably the most straight forward. I started off by photocopying some of the drawings I made previously for this project and printing those using different block ink colours.
I then cut and mounted some drawings with others to experiment with different dimensions and create new sketches.
I really enjoyed using different tools to make various marks like a fork, my fingers, a pen and tissue paper.

In this print, I used a fork to create marks around the tree and used tissue paper in circular motions to create depth and darker marks with the ink:

My favourite one overall was the blue one above. I combined two drawings i made from different sides of the university building in to 1 building with a different dimension. I think this print was really successful with experimenting and mark making.

V&A and Natural History Museum

I took a trip to Sloane square station to visit the Saatchi gallery as I hadn't been there in a while but unfortunately it was closed for refurbishments.
I didn't want to waste the day so I headed off to the V&A and Natural History museum as they were close by.

ANN - Drawings & Experimentation

I made a few more drawings today and also took some photos so I could use a wider range of materials at home. For some reason I prefer todays drawings to yesterdays. I looked at the Peckham Road building this time & the South London gallery and made drawings from the interior and the exterior.
I enjoyed this task because I love drawing in general but I wasn't particularly inspired by drawing the university and found it quite boring after the third drawing.
